Everything you need to know about glass types, glazing options, and frame materials.
Standard Glass is the most common and affordable option. Suitable for many applications but can break into sharp shards.
Toughened (Safety) Glass is heated and rapidly cooled, making it up to 5× stronger. When it breaks, it crumbles into small, blunt pieces. Required by building regulations in doors, windows near floor level, and bathrooms.
Laminated Glass consists of two or more layers bonded with an interlayer. When broken, the glass holds together — ideal for security, roof glazing, and skylights.
Single glazing uses one pane and offers minimal insulation. Increasingly rare in modern homes.
Double glazing uses two panes separated by an argon-gas-filled gap, providing much better thermal and acoustic insulation. The standard for UK homes.
Triple glazing adds a third pane for the best performance. Especially beneficial for north-facing windows and provides superior noise reduction.
Windows are rated from A++ (most efficient) to E. A-rated windows use advanced coatings, warm edge spacer bars, and insulating gas fills to dramatically reduce heat loss. Upgrading can save hundreds of pounds per year.
